I suppose you could say that this is rapidly approaching the point of no return, metaphorically. At this point, the explanation starts getting pretty controversial.

Because of the infinite quality to the Multiverse, any and every possibility must be played out in at least one. What does this mean? It means that anything we can imagine has or will play out in at least one universe. "Inventing" a character or story isn't possible. Writers and artists do not invent characters or stories, they learn them empathically, and express them. Those "characters" and "stories" are the stuff of other universes, which, through empathy, can affect our universe much as a star produces dark matter in an adjacent universe.

When authors know their "character's" favorite color, food, birth sign, etc, it's a matter of empathizing strongly enough with that person to interpret these things. Even non-artists/writers get this, too. Everyone has watched a movie or read a book that conjured tears or laughter all because they "feel for" the "main character" – they empathize with the "character", who through the laws of infinite possibilities, exists as a real person in at least one other universe.

Empathetic connections go beyond just this, though. Some rarer individuals have incredibly heightened levels of empathy, at least for our universe (it's actually not that high compared to other universes). Many of them tend to be the artist/writer type, but they aren't always. These people tend to be fairly emotional, and very sensitive to... well, everything -- everything that has to do with any kind of emotion or energy. And for these people, it goes beyond the connection between a "writer" and a "character". The strength of the empathetic connection, especially if it occurs multiple times, becomes somewhat of a metaphoric wormhole in space-time: a pathway. This pathway allows for equal communication, instead of one-way communication as seen in the writer/character empathetic relationship. That is, both sides empathize with each other.

The people that reach this level have high empathetic abilities and an open mind, because even if you are predisposed to high empathetic sensitivity, if you reject it through closed-mindedness, you will suppress that ability, or ignore it entirely, and probably not reach this level of empathetic communication.

The people that do reach this level, though, have very high chances of deepening empathetic connections further to the point where actual coherent communication is possible. I realize that what I'm talking about is on the level of telepathy, and hard to accept, but it's not as crazy as most people think. We communicate verbally, visually, and by touch when interacting with people within our own world because that is what is accessible, and because it is rare for people to have high enough levels of empathy to reach this level anyway. You could say that without ever having any need for it, the ability to communicate mind-to-mind isn't developed because it isn't conceived in most people, therefore it would be silly and ineffective to use that as a means of communication in this world. However, when communicating with an individual from another universe, empathy is literally all that ties the two people together -- there is no visual, auditory, or other sensory information by which to communicate, so communication must occur in an empathy-based way, as that is the only way the two have contact in the first place.

It's hard to explain mindspeak. It's not like the stereotypical telepathy as much as it seems. It is two minds communicating, so it doesn't rely just on words. Whole memory scenes, visual cues, and linguistic thought are all incorporated into it. The mind thinks in more than just words, and therefore mindspeak is more than just words.

Once this heightened level of communication has been reached, a very solid connection has been formed between those two people by means of empathy in a way that literally conjoins universes. These connections aren't completely limitless, typically, though. Some people have vast potential, called open channelers, and are so emotionally sensitive that they can form a complete and consummate connection with the first empathetic spark. Others are slightly more limited in that they need "knowledge" or "experience" of the person they're forming a connection with in order to build that pathway through accumulated empathy. Both of these have the strongest connections with a certain frequency of people.

Each individual has a sort of fingerprinted spirit. The energy essence that animates them, fuels their thought and their mind -- their spirit -- resonates at a certain level, which is best interpreted as a frequency. Harmonizing or similar frequencies generally build stronger connections, even unintentionally, which is why it's common for one channeler (someone with the empathetic capabilities and the knowledge to form consummate connections) to connect to several people, and yet find commonalities and patterns in who they are most strongly aligned with.

The next level of empathy is arguably the highest tier in the hierarchy, and is probably the hardest for any person to accept, which is why so few people reach this level in this world, especially with the social stigma and zeitgeist against it. Channeling. That is, controlled possession.

In a consummate empathetic connection, the minds of the two parties are so utterly connected, and each person's mind is so empathetically experienced that one may abandon their body to, instead, take dominance over the others. However, done right, this is not as frightening or dangerous as it sounds. It is a mutual dominance, and the person who "gives up" control actually maintains limits over what the other can do, and has the power to force the other out if absolutely necessary. That is, while one spirit is hosted in a body not owned by them, no matter the actual power levels, the original host of the body will have more power over the body because the body still resonates at their spirit frequency, and responds the best to that frequency. There are a few dangerous and rare occasions where true possession occurs, and usually only in two scenarios. One is that the host's energy is so exhausted that they cannot maintain a mutual connection strong enough to support channeling at the moment, and so the other can only channel through complete possession, but both parties give consent. The other is that the connection itself is not mutual, but forced connection by a powerful individual who then invades the mind of the other. This is very rare, and requires a great deal of power to accomplish.

While one's body is being lent out, the original host has two choices. One is to reside in the depths of their own mind without interfering with the other's dominance, dwelling within the half-dimension that every empathetically gifted mind has. This half-dimension is more complex with increasing empathetic ability. For a regular person, it would be like a void, without anything in it. For a very gifted person, it could be like a whole, small world, though typically without native life in it. A half-dimension is like a little bubble world, and is usually unstable and prone to change. It is too unstable to house natural life, and has the potential to collapse upon itself at any time if its homeostasis is interrupted. It typically exists outside of certain laws of the universe, or experiences distorted versions of those laws, such as time and space. A half-dimension literally does not occupy space, though space exists within it: an unstable paradox. At any rate, these half-dimensions connected to each mind are stabilized by our spirit, our frequency, which is why they do not collapse upon themselves. They are still somewhat shifting, though, in that they are constantly in a flux of change. For a lot of people, this is the place that they "go" when they meditate.

The other place that some people "go" to when they meditate is exactly the other option for if you give up dominance to your body. That is, you leave entirely.

Of course, it's not convenient like walking through a wormhole to another world at all. You are, after all, disembodied at the moment, which is exactly what allows you to pass through the dimensional fabric in the first place. Energy travels through dimensional fabric to varying degrees, the spirit very well, but matter cannot unless there is a hole or tear within the fabric. So, after arriving in another world (usually by following the empathetic path like a road), you can either take over the other party's currently empty body, stay in a spirit-only state, or, in rare circumstances, incarnate or partially-incarnate a body for yourself. I suppose you could parallel it to a gigai. A full incarnation is impossible for almost everyone, as it requires insane levels of energy to accomplish (try plugging that one into Einstein's equation of e=mc^2), however, some can create a gigai-like body for themselves which exists only temporarily -- only as long as they sustain it.

This, however, as you can already see, requires power. It's something that I've mentioned quite a few times already without fully explaining myself. Power is an energy, like light or heat or sound, but I speak of it in raw forms. Power, majic, spirit energy, however you name it, is a purely raw energy form which has the potential to convert to any energy type, or matter itself (which is much more energy-consuming and difficult). It is a product of our spirit, or, you could say, it is our spirit itself. Inarguably, we require a certain level of this energy simply to live. Channelers need even more, in order to sustain existing connections and form new ones. It is any energy existing in levels above this necessary requirement that is termed power. Also, power like any other type of energy, requires a means of transport, a certain environment in which to conduct. Within our bodies, this energy easily transports (or else we wouldn't be able to live), but outside of our bodies -- in this world -- it cannot conduct well, if at all. It's a sad truth, but our universe has been termed as "dead" or "dying" because it lacks a certain field, not unlike the electromagnetic field, which allows for the conduction of that energy. It's very comparable to trying to shout to someone in the middle of space. There is no matter, so sound cannot travel. Well, in this universe, power cannot travel either because it has no vehicle to carry it outside of the body.

Now, there are a few remaining particles of a pre-existing field, which is why we still have some exceptions to this rule, and at certain times power is conducted to a certain level, but as a rule it will either fail completely or be incredibly diminished when used in this world, even by someone not native to our universe. The only part of the field left in our world is a hint of empathy, which is exactly what allows for us to connect to others fully. That is why many empathy-based power expressions are more likely to occur than other types of power expressions. You are more likely to ease someone's pain using power in this world than you are likely to create a diamond. Also, it is very much the only means of measuring power we have here. The people who have high levels of power typically are very empathetically sensitive, to the point of picking out substances holding higher traces of the old power-field (types of crystals, ruins, amulets, bones, flowers, etc) and to the point of having what I term "second sight." Second sight occurs when an individual has such a high degree of empathy that they literally perceive things through their empathy so strongly that it equivocates the ability of their vision, and they see on two levels. One level reveals the physical world as any person here would see it, but the other is empathetically enhanced to be able to see noncorporeal entities, strange energies, weaknesses in dimensional fabric, etc. Also, strong empathetic individuals are likely to have high degrees of power in other areas, even if it cannot be expressed in this world. For instance, a powerful empathetic individual, if they should travel to a universe that better conducts power, may easily be able to summon fire or lightning, and physically heal others (either by reversing time in an isolated area of space, by speeding up time to the point of healing -- which can produce scars -- or by materializing new flesh/blood through the materials around them, or through energy itself -- this last method is the least efficient because it requires so much energy).
